Hey everyone. I never really owned the "Jesus Freaks" Tribe like I should have, and I need to hand off this seedling to someone who is interested in developing it. I think this Tribe has a lot of opportunity, and I really am sorry I have not done what I intended to do with it. I am now managing the tech team behind the launch of an Online Campus for Christ Fellowship church in West Palm Beach Florida, so that is where I am pouring into a virtual community: http://gochristfellowship.com/online/sermons/

Hey, Santa Claus!

I grew up in a Methodist home (technically) and was raised with the notion of Santa Claus planted firmly in my brain. We always left cookies for Santa, and would receive one gift from him on Christmas morning - unwrapped, in front of the tree, and usually the one thing we'd really wanted for Christmas.

I assumed I would do the same for my son. I have a collection of the letters J.R.R. Tolkien wrote his children (from Santa) each Christmas, and I'd been excited to share the same experiences I had as a child with my son.

Then my wife and I talked. She and her family weren't against Santa Claus, per se, but she doesn't want to tell our son that Santa Claus really exists. After her arguments, and after our pastor's sermon this past Sunday, I find myself surprised to agree:

1. Why lie to kids?

2. She wants to teach him about the real St. Nicholas, and participate in the Dutch holiday on Dec. 6.

3. For Christmas, she'd rather tell our son that everyone *pretends* that Santa Claus exists - which is true. It's a small, but I feel important, distinction. We won't leave Santa out of Christmas, but we make clear that he doesn't truthfully exist. Because...

4. How can I expect my son to believe in God when he finds out that Santa doesn't exist? "You said Santa Claus existed, but he doesn't. What about God?" Santa Claus is pretend, God is not. The same goes for the Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny, etc.

And the most important argument:

5. The focus of Christmas is Christ. Ironically, it's during the season when we should be thinking of Christ when we create the most distractions from the true meaning of Christmas. Why encourage that?

Spiritually, morally, and educationally it just makes sense for me to have a fun pretend game with my son about Santa Clause, rather than trying to convince him that he really exists.

A Hijacked Faith

I found myself agreeing with Tony Campolo on several points in this interview by Beliefnet:

I didn't become a Christian until after college, though I was raised Methodist. I was turned away from the faith by many of the attitudes condemned by Campolo, and I know many non-believes are, as well.

The Christianity I hear Atheists condeming is not the Christianity I've found in the Bible - so how do we 'take back the faith', for lack of a better term? Paul warns against divisions between Christians, but what do I do when faced with a dichotomy such as Campolo mentions?

Ok, so I never really got this Tribe off the ground like I wanted to. If we are real freaks about Jesus we ought to do this thing. Just like our walks with Christ, this Christian communities online are an experiment. God knows the plans He has for us, but we don't.

So, let's see if Christian communities online can work. Invite your friends to the Jesus Freaks tribe! Spread the Word.

Why are there not more Jesus Freaks?

Hello all. Thought I would ask a question for our small group and see if y'all can tell me why there are not more Jesus freaks on Tribe.

Do Christians use the internet less? Are they more guarded with their relationships and what they forward on to friends? Or, is it that when they are online they lose their Christian affiliation in order to maintain their privacy/anonymity? Let me know what you think!

Islam...Your perspective!!!

I was reading up on some other religions in the world and thought I would check out islam. Doing a search on google brought up a website about Jesus and Islam. If you do not already know, islam considers Jesus a prophet and healer. As I kept reading I was intrigued by some of the other claims that they made.
One is that Jesus was never crucified. He didnt die in anyway, but rather was called back by Allah.
Two, he was no better than Muhammad,A slave to Allah.
And Three at the end of times they believe that Jesus will be back, not as king of kings, but rather islam leader.

Just curious as to what your thoughts are to this.
